Brake pad replacement is one of the highest-value DIY jobs. Shops charge $200-400 per axle. The parts are $30-80. The tools are $50 one-time. If your driveway is level and you have a couple of hours, you can do this. Here's the full process.
Brakes are life-safety. Never work on brakes with a jack alone — always use jack stands. Never drive on a car whose brake job you're unsure about. Test at low speed in a parking lot before highway driving. If ANY step doesn't make sense mid-job, stop and get help — a botched brake job kills people.
When to replace
- Squealing during braking: the wear indicator (a small metal tab) is scraping the rotor. Pads have ~10% of their life left. Replace within a month.
- Grinding sound: pads are gone, metal backing is scraping metal rotor. Immediate replacement — rotors likely also need to be replaced or turned.
- Pedal goes lower than usual: could be wear, could be fluid loss. Investigate immediately.
- Pulsing/vibration when braking: warped rotors. Pads may be fine but rotors need machining or replacement.
- Visual: pad material under 3mm thick. Look through the wheel spokes with a flashlight.
Tools you need
- Jack + 2 jack stands (rated for your car's weight)
- Wheel chocks (to block the wheels not being lifted)
- Lug wrench that fits your car's lugs
- Socket set (usually metric, 10-19mm covers most)
- C-clamp OR proper brake caliper piston compressor tool ($15 online)
- Torque wrench (rent from any auto parts store free with parts purchase)
- Brake cleaner spray ($5)
- Anti-squeal grease ($5) — copper- or silicone-based, NOT copper on hybrid/EVs
- New brake pads (matched to your specific vehicle — Rockauto or Amazon)
- Optional: new hardware kit (springs/clips) — cheap ($10-20), highly recommended
- Optional: new rotors ($40-100 per rotor) if old ones are grooved, worn thin, or warped
Step-by-step
1. Prep (10 min)
- Park on level ground, engine off, in gear (manual) or Park (auto), parking brake ON.
- Chock the rear wheels (if doing fronts) or front wheels (if doing rears).
- Break the lug nuts loose BEFORE jacking — 1/4 turn each, tire on ground.
2. Lift + secure (10 min)
- Jack the car up at the manufacturer's jack point (check the owner's manual — hitting the wrong spot bends metal).
- Place jack stand under a structural point. NEVER work under a car held only by a jack.
- Repeat for the other side of the axle.
- Remove the wheels.
3. Remove the caliper (10 min per side)
- Two bolts hold the caliper to the caliper bracket (usually 12-17mm). Remove them.
- Pry the caliper OFF the pads with a big flathead screwdriver (gently — the pads may be stuck to the rotor from rust).
- Hang the caliper with a bungee cord or zip tie from the suspension. NEVER let it dangle from the brake hose — that damages the hose.
4. Remove old pads + inspect (5 min per side)
- Old pads slide out of the caliper bracket. Note orientation.
- Look at the rotor: significant grooves (deeper than 1mm), lip on the outer edge, or bluish heat marks = replace the rotor too.
- Measure rotor thickness with the calipers if you have them. Every rotor has a "min thickness" stamp — below that, replace.
5. Compress the caliper piston (5 min per side)
- The piston pushed outward to compensate for wear on the old pads. New (thicker) pads won't fit until you push it back in.
- Use a C-clamp with the old pad as a cushion, OR a proper caliper compressor tool.
- Compress SLOWLY — the fluid gets pushed back to the master cylinder. If the reservoir was topped off, this can overflow. Open the reservoir cap, watch level.
- Some rear calipers (with parking brake integration) require a windup tool that rotates the piston as it compresses. If yours won't compress with a straight push, you need a windup tool ($15 at any parts store).
6. Install new hardware (optional but recommended, 5 min)
- New springs/clips/anti-rattle hardware come in the hardware kit. Match orientation with old parts.
- Skip this step at your risk — old hardware causes squeal, uneven pad wear.
7. Install new pads (5 min per side)
- Apply thin layer of anti-squeal grease to the BACK of the pad and the metal contact points where it touches the caliper bracket. NEVER get grease on the friction surface.
- Slide new pads into place.
8. Reinstall caliper (5 min per side)
- Slide caliper back over the new pads.
- Reinstall the two mounting bolts. Torque to spec (usually 15-30 ft-lb — check your car's spec).
- Some caliper bolts require thread locker (blue Loctite). Check.
9. Reinstall wheel (5 min per side)
- Wheel on, lug nuts hand-tight.
- Lower car to just touching the ground.
- Torque lug nuts to spec in a star pattern (typically 80-100 ft-lb — check your spec).
10. Bed in the new pads (15 min)
This is the step most DIYers skip and it makes a huge difference in pad life.
- Before starting engine: pump the brake pedal 5-10 times until firm. This pushes the pistons back out to touch the new pads. If you skip this, first press = pedal to the floor + no braking. Dangerous.
- Drive to an empty parking lot or quiet road.
- Accelerate to 40 mph, brake firmly (not lockup) down to 5 mph. Don't stop.
- Repeat 6-8 times without letting the pads fully cool between (don't stop and hold the pedal — keep rolling).
- Then drive normally with light brake use for the next 30 min to let pads fully cure.
Common gotchas
- Caliper bolts stuck: old ones stripped or seized. Penetrating oil, impact driver, or replace them.
- Piston won't compress: either rear caliper needs windup tool, or the piston is seized. Seized = new caliper.
- Brake fluid overflowed reservoir: soak up immediately with rags. Fluid is corrosive to paint.
- New pads squeal: forgot anti-squeal grease, or new hardware not installed. Also normal for first 100 miles.
- Sensor wire on the pads: some cars have electronic wear sensors. If you cut this wire during install, dash light comes on. Some new pads include sensors, some don't — match your original.
Should you also replace the rotor?
If ANY of these are true, yes:
- Rotor has visible deep grooves (deeper than 1mm)
- Rotor thickness measured under the "min thickness" stamp on the rotor
- Rotor has heat spots (bluish tint)
- You feel pulsing when braking now
- Rotors are 100k+ miles old
New rotors are $40-100 each. Turning old rotors on a lathe (machining flat again) is $15-20 per rotor at some shops but risks going under min thickness. For $80 total, just replace both fronts.
How long it takes
- Fronts only, first time: 2-3 hours
- Fronts only, experienced: 45-60 minutes
- Both axles, first time: 4-5 hours
- Both axles, experienced: 2 hours
