Your car's Vehicle Identification Number is a 17-character key that unlocks a huge amount of free data about your specific vehicle. Most owners don't know this — most mechanics don't tell them, because it undercuts their diagnostic charges. Here's the full playbook.
Where to find your VIN
- Driver's side dashboard: visible through the windshield from outside. 17 characters, no I, O, or Q.
- Driver's door jamb: sticker with VIN, tire specs, and gross vehicle weight rating
- Insurance card or registration: printed on both

What your VIN encodes
- Positions 1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier — country + manufacturer (e.g., 1G = General Motors USA)
- Positions 4-8: Vehicle attributes — model, body style, engine type, restraint system
- Position 9: Check digit (validates the VIN mathematically)
- Position 10: Model year (2020 = L, 2021 = M, 2022 = N, etc.)
- Position 11: Assembly plant
- Positions 12-17: Sequential production number
