P0455 shows up more than almost any other code, and 40% of the time the fix is genuinely "tighten your gas cap." Yeah. Really. Here's the full picture.

What EVAP does

The Evaporative Emissions Control system captures fuel vapors from the gas tank before they escape into the atmosphere. Vapors get stored in a charcoal canister, then periodically purged into the intake to be burned. Every once in a while (usually at cold start, key off) the ECU seals the system and applies a small vacuum to check for leaks.

If it can't hold vacuum — because something is letting vapor escape — you get an EVAP code:

Step 0: Tighten the gas cap. Seriously.

If the cap isn't torqued down enough, or if the seal is dirty, or if the cap has cracked over years of UV exposure, P0455 sets. Solution: click-tighten the cap (should ratchet 3 clicks). Wipe the sealing surface. If the rubber O-ring is dry-rotted, buy a $10 replacement cap.

Drive 50-100 miles of mixed conditions to let the EVAP monitor re-run. If the code doesn't come back, you're done. Free.

Step 1: Never top off fuel past the pump's first click

This is a habit that kills EVAP systems slowly. When you add fuel past the automatic shutoff, liquid fuel goes into the charcoal canister and destroys the charcoal. A saturated canister can't hold vapors → leak codes forever.

If you've been topping off for years, your canister may be shot ($100-300 part, 1-2 hr DIY). Symptoms: chronic P0455 that comes back within days of clearing, sometimes a strong fuel smell near the tank.

Step 2: Check the fuel filler neck

The filler neck runs from the gas cap down to the tank. It's exposed to road salt, water splash, and general rust. On older cars especially, the filler neck can rust through. Look up at it from under the car — visible rust holes = leak.

Replacement runs $50-200 depending on the car, moderate DIY difficulty (need to drop or partially drop the fuel tank on some models).

Step 3: EVAP purge valve (solenoid)

The purge valve is what opens to pull vapors from the canister into the intake. If it's stuck open (or leaking closed), the EVAP system can't seal for the leak test.

Test: disconnect the electrical connector at the purge valve. Apply 12V briefly. You should hear a click. Blow through it — should be closed with no voltage, open with voltage.

Replacement: $20-80 part, 15-30 min. Usually mounted near the intake manifold or on top of the engine.

Step 4: EVAP vent valve

The vent valve is the OTHER end — usually near the charcoal canister at the back of the vehicle. It lets fresh air INTO the system when needed. If stuck open, the system can't seal.

These live in the wheel well or above the tank and get filthy with road grime, mud, insect debris. Sometimes you can clean it out. Replacement $30-80.

Step 5: Cracked EVAP hoses

Rubber hoses run all over the EVAP system. Over 8-15 years they crack, especially where they bend or heat-cycle. Visually inspect every visible EVAP hose. Any crack = leak.

Fix: replace individual hoses. $10-30 each. Common failure points: hose from canister to purge valve, hose from tank pressure sensor.

Step 6: Get a smoke test

If you've done everything above and P0455 still comes back, pay $50-100 for a shop to smoke-test the EVAP system. They pressurize with visible white smoke, and the leak literally puffs out wherever it's happening. This is the definitive test — even pinhole leaks show up in seconds.

DIY smoke testers exist ($100-200) if you want to buy one. Uses baby oil in an air compressor tank. Overkill for one car, worth it for a side-hustle mechanic.
