The single most useful test you can do on your car costs $20 for a multimeter and 60 seconds. Here's every battery voltage reading and what it means.
The magic numbers
Engine off, everything off, at rest 30+ minutes
- 12.6V - 12.9V: Fully charged, healthy
- 12.4V - 12.5V: 75% charged, still starts fine
- 12.2V - 12.3V: 50% charged, may struggle in cold
- Under 12.0V: Under 25% charged. Won't reliably start. Charge it before load testing.
- Under 10.5V: Deeply discharged. Battery may be damaged. If it doesn't recover from a full charge to at least 12.4V, replace.
Engine running, all accessories off
- 13.7V - 14.7V: Alternator working correctly, battery being charged
- Under 13.5V: Alternator not charging enough. Check belt, alternator, and battery connections.
- Over 15.0V: Voltage regulator failed. Alternator is overcharging — will kill the battery + cook electronics. Fix immediately.
Engine running, all accessories ON (headlights, HVAC max, defroster, radio)
- Should still be 13.4V+: Alternator can keep up with the load
- Under 13.0V: Alternator is undersized or weak. Getting worse from here.
During crank (someone starts the engine while you watch)
- 10.5V or higher: Battery healthy, will crank strong
- 9.0V - 10.5V: Battery weak, may not start in cold weather
- Under 9.0V: Battery bad OR excessive starter draw. Replace battery first, retest.
How to test
Basic voltage test (30 seconds)
- Set multimeter to 20V DC range
- Touch red probe to positive (+) battery terminal, black probe to negative (-)
- Read the voltage on the display
- Compare to the numbers above
Load test (real health indicator, requires help)
- Meter connected as above
- Have someone crank the engine while you watch the voltage
- Voltage should stay above 10.5V during crank
- If it drops below 9V — battery can't handle load. Replace even if resting voltage looks OK.
Charging system test
- Meter still connected
- Start the engine, let it idle
- Read voltage — should be 13.7-14.7V
- Turn on all accessories (headlights, AC, rear defrost, radio loud)
- Voltage should stay above 13.4V
- Rev to 2000 RPM — should stay in 13.7-14.7V range
What kills batteries early
- Heat. Batteries in Phoenix last 2-3 years. Same battery in Seattle lasts 6-7. Heat kills the electrolyte.
- Deep discharges. Every time you kill a battery dead (lights left on, aux draw), you shorten its life. 5-10 deep discharges = replacement time even on a "good" battery.
- Corroded terminals. Corrosion adds resistance = alternator can't fully charge = battery sits at 12.2V for months = plate sulfation. Clean terminals with baking soda + water paste every year.
- Vibration. Loose hold-down bracket lets battery bounce = internal plates shed = capacity drops. Torque the bracket.
- Undersized battery. Aftermarket "cheap" batteries often have lower CCA than OEM spec. Cranking harder every start = shorter life.
When to replace vs recharge
If resting voltage is 12.0V+ and it starts the car reliably, keep it. Recharge if needed (a $30 smart charger will restore health to a battery that hasn't been abused).
Replace when:
- Load test drops below 9.5V (definitive)
- Battery is over 4 years old AND showing weakness
- Physical damage: swollen case, leaking, cracked terminals
- You've had to jump-start it 3+ times without a clear cause
What to buy
Match your car's OEM specs (Group size, CCA rating). Costco is the value winner — Interstate batteries with 3-year full replacement for $100-150. Advance Auto/AutoZone brand batteries are also fine. Skip the $50 no-name ones from marketplace sellers.
Reading battery in the app
